Lawsuit Happy Monsanto Getting Sued Over GMO

by Steve Eastman

There's an old saying that what goes around comes around.

You probably know Monsanto has patented seeds for a number of its genetically modified crops.  Then when the seeds blow into neighboring fields and take root, the Big Agra firm sues the farmers, claiming they violated the company's intellectual property.

What you may not know is that Monsanto has not yet offered GMO wheat commercially.  The company is still experimenting with the product and that's what got it into trouble.

Last week the USDA announced a shocking discovery.  Seeds from Monsanto's open fields drifted over to neighboring commercial farms.  You may have heard the headlines that Japan and South Korea were cancelling US wheat purchases over this very issue.

Well, wheat farmer Earnest Barnes, of Morton County, Kansas, isn't stupid.  This week he filed suit in Federal Court in Wichita, charging Monsanto with damaging his business and that of other farmers.

The company promises a "vigorous defense".  What did you expect, Monsanto taking responsibility for alleged negligence?  Not them.
