Secret Theatre Shooting

“It brings back memories of the other theater shooting, and the elementary school shooting.”  That’s what an eyewitness told MySanAntonio.com about a theatre shooting that occurred two days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut and five months after the Batman movie massacre in Colorado.  So why haven’t we heard about it before?

The shooting was covered extensively by local media in San Antonio, but for the most part, the national media has treated it like a secret.  We’ll tell you the likely reason in a moment, but first let’s consider the facts.

Authorities say 19 year-old Jesus Garcia, an employee of the China Garden restaurant next to the theatre, became upset after a break-up with his girlfriend — so upset that he sent her a message saying he planned to shoot somebody.

His first reported shot was at the restaurant’s front door, then he headed to the Mayan Palace 14 Theatre and where he allegedly continued his gunfire.  One movie-goer was shot in the back, but was treated and released at San Antonio Military Medical Center that same night, December 16th.  Garcia has been charged with aggravated assault.

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy, who also worked part-time at the cinema — Sergeant Lisa Castellano — shot at Garcia four times, cornering him in a restroom and took his gun.

That is likely the key reason, why you may not have heard this story before.  Let’s say it again.  A theatre employee fired a gun to stop a possible massacre.  It just doesn’t fit the mainstream media’s agenda-driven sense of newsworthiness.   After all, someone might get the idea that guns could save lives.
