France Loses Top Actor Over High Taxes

As far as we know Gerard Depardieu did not ask, “Who is John Galt?” But his departure from his native France sounds like something that could have come straight out of the Atlas Shrugged movies.  In those films, society’s top producers disappear in response to excessive government interference.

Depardieu has put his 10-bedroom Paris mansion up for sale and promises to turn in his passport and Social Security card.  He’s also announced plans to move to tax-friendly Belgium.

France has a 75 percent super-tax on high earners.  Last year Depardieu paid 85 percent of his income in taxes, all types included.

The 64 year-old French actor has made more than 150 films.  One of his best-known movies in the US is 1990’s Green Card with Andie McDowell.

Meanwhile in America, Barack Obama hopes to follow France’s lead and penalize society’s producers.
