Just the mention of the church founded by televangelist Creflo Dollar conjures up images of life, health and wealth.  But today it was as though someone’s worst negative confession came true.  Worship pastor Greg McDowell, a 39 year-old volunteer at World Changers Church in greater Atlanta, was fatally shot around 10:30 AM while leading prayer at a Bible study.

As Fulton County Police Corporal Kay Lester puts it, the gunman “walked calmly into the church and left just as calmly.”  The US Marshal’s Service reports 52 year-old Floyd Palmer was arrested not quite six hours later at Lenox Square Mall.

Palmer, a former employee at the church, resigned as a maintenance worker last August, citing personal reasons.  So far police are not saying if McDowell was targeted or shot at random.  Although about two dozen people were present, no one else was hurt when the minister received six gunshot wounds.

Another minister at the church, Ken Terry, told the media this evening that McDowell was a model dad. “"He's a tremendous leader in our church, a tremendous server, just a dynamic guy."

Creflo Dollar and his wife Taffi founded World Changers in 1988 with eight members.  Now the church boasts 30 thousand.
