More Illegal Fundraising by Obama?

He got away with it a year ago, but not without criticism.  Now he’s at it again.

You’ve most likely heard about Barack Obama’s trip to Colorado last weekend to assess devastation caused by the wildfires.  But you may not know about an eighteen-minute conference call he made to big money donors on his way back to Washington on Air Force One.  It seems it was on behalf of his own re-election campaign.

According to a tape reportedly supplied to The Daily Beast by an Obama contributor, the current occupant of the White House asked for more money than what they gave in 2008.  “And if we don’t, frankly I think the political [scene] is going to be changed permanently.  Because the special interests that are financing my opponent’s campaign are just going to consolidate themselves.  They’re gonna run Congress and the White House.”

The article notes Air Force One is equipped with a special phone “dedicated to political calls that are paid for by the campaign.”

So what’s the big deal you ask?  It all comes down to how you apply a particular section of US Code, which says, “It shall be unlawful for an individual who is an officer or employee of the Federal Government, including the President, Vice President, and Members of Congress, to solicit or receive a donation of money or other thing of value in connection with a Federal, State, or local election, while in any room or building occupied in the discharge of official duties by an officer or employee of the United States, from any person.”  There’s even a penalty of up to five thousand dollars and three years in prison.

The question is — does the definition of room or building apply to Air Force One, which incidentally has taxpayer-funded operating expenses of 180 thousand dollars an hour?

Last time Obama tried something like this, he videotaped a campaign commercial in the White House map room, where he begged for cash.  It was a clear-cut violation.  This time maybe it’s more of a murky area, but Obama thrives on murky.  Besides, he probably didn’t think you’d hear about this.  And don’t expect any inquiries from the Justice Department, not after the way officials there did nothing about Attorney General Eric Holder’s recent contempt of Congress.  It must be nice to be king.
