Richard Roberts Charged with DUI

It was the car’s speed that caught Trooper Jacob Smith’s attention.  The officer reports clocking the 2006 Mercedes at 93 miles an hour in a 65 mile an hour zone.  It happened early today just after midnight near Tulsa.

Smith says he detected “the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage around Richard Roberts breath and person.”  Roberts reportedly blew a .11 percent on a breathalyzer.  Oklahoma’s legal limit is 0.08.  The 63 year-old televangelist spent about three hours in jail.  He was released on a $1,100 bond.

Roberts and his wife Lindsay host a nationwide TV program, The Place for Miracles, Your Hour of Healing.  There’s no word if he’ll take a break from TV or will continue broadcasting as usual.

Roberts was president of Oral Roberts University from 1985 to 2007, when he stepped down amid cries for his resignation.  At issue were allegations of improper use of university and ministry money.

ORU requires faculty and students to sign a pledge not to drink alcohol, but officials there are taking the high road. "Our prayers go out to Richard and Lindsay Roberts and their entire family as they face this life challenge.  May God's grace help them as they work towards healing."
